TAMIU Spring Commencement Exercise Sees 794 Candidates for Graduation

Some  794 candidates for graduation from Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) participated in  Spring Commencement Exercises at the Sames Auto Arena (SAA) on Wednesday, May 8 at 4 p.m.

The Commencement Address for the Spring Exercises was provided by Alfonso Gómez-Rejón, Laredo-born film director and TV producer and St. Augustine High School graduate. Gómez-Rejón was director of the critically-acclaimed film “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” the 2015 Sundance Film Festival winner of the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award.

He  received his B.F.A. from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts and his M.F.A from the American Film Institute. Gómez-Rejón began his career as a personal assistant, and later second unit director, to Martin Scorsese, Nora Ephron and Alejandro González Iñárritu. He collaborated again with Scorsese on Chanel’s international campaign for their “Bleu de Chanel” fragrance launch by writing the Scorsese-directed commercial.

He has garnered Emmy nominations for his work as director and co-executive producer on ​TV’s American Horror Story: Coven​ and directed episodes of ​American Horror Story's​ first four seasons, as well as the first four seasons of the musical comedy-drama series G​lee​.

Gómez-Rejón's most recent feature, ​The Current War,​ starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Shannon, Tom Holland and Nicholas Hoult, will be released worldwide this Fall.

TAMIU student respondent for the Ceremony was Kiana Lee Izaguirre, graduating  Summa Cum Laude with a 3.94 GPA and a Bachelor of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Additional Distinguished Student Scholars and their respective Colleges or Schools included: Karina Isabel Rupisan De Guzmán, A. R. Sanchez, Jr. School of Business; Alejandra Diaz, College of Arts and Sciences; Mayte Guzmán, College of Education; Kiana Lee Izaguirre, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and Juan Pablo Pérez, University College.

This Commencement Exercise included four Ph.D. recipients and helped to usher in the University’s 50th Anniversary Celebration that kicks off in August.
