TAMIU’s Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing Gets Top State Ranking
Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) has received a top ranking among the State’s best BSN programs in the fourth annual nursing school rankings by RNCareers, a specialty nursing publication.
TAMIU’s BSN was ranked 12th, outranking other BSN nursing schools including Texas Woman’s University (14), the University of Texas-Austin (15), the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (19) and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (23).
To arrive at the ranking, the authors used NCLEX exam pass rates, tuition costs and faculty and only ranked CCNE, ACEN, and state-approved nursing programs. For its Texas BSN ranking, 36 Texas programs were reviewed. Statewide, there are 103 RN programs in 70 different cities.
TAMIU Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Dr. F. M. Canseco School of Nursing, Dr. Glenda Walker, said the ranking is a helpful indicator that demonstrates the importance of accredited nursing education for students.
“Like other BSN-ranked schools, we are committed to ensuring that our students have the best education and best preparation for the health care challenges of both today and tomorrow. We pride ourselves on building a program that offers students distinct learning and experience opportunities and, most importantly, attractive employment options. We’re pleased that this ranking group recognized how our faculty delivers on these measurables, as affirmed by this positive ranking. We were especially proud that our program outranked larger, more established programs at larger schools in larger cities,” Dr. Walker said.
“Nursing is one of TAMIU’s most popular programs and entry is competitive. In the past two years, we’ve expanded to grow with student interest. We want to provide all undergraduate BSN students with an opportunity to earn the entry-level standard of education for the nursing profession, while maintaining an enviable professor to student ratio of 1:10. This optimal ratio, combined with research and service-travel opportunities, collaborative initiatives, impressive on-campus labs and student team engagement all help to distinguish our program and our graduates…who routinely have multiple job offers,” Dr. Walker explained.
Dr. Walker noted that RNCareers reviewers have also ranked Laredo College positively for its Associate’s Degree in Nursing program.
“RNCareers also ranked Laredo College’s Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) program first in the State, which is impressive, and we congratulate them. As LC is one of our larger transfer student sources, we are glad to work with transfers and graduates as they pursue additional career growth and income-enhancing nursing education at TAMIU with undergraduate or graduate nursing degrees,” Walker said.
At the undergraduate level, the Canseco School of Nursing offers a traditional BSN degree and an RN to BSN that is offered completely online. The latter can be completed in as few as 12 months.
At the graduate level, the School of Nursing offers a Master of Science in Nursing, Family Nurse Practitioner program (MSN-FNP) and a Master of Science in Nursing Administration (MSN-ADM) focused on the critical role of Nursing in Health Care Management.
