A 50th Anniversary doesn’t happen every day.  That’s why Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students have decided that they wanted to do something “big” to observe the Anniversary.

As TAMIU May Criminal Justice graduate and now graduate student Mario Gutiérrez explained, it’s all about service.  More specifically, it’s all about the TAMIU Service Challenge to deliver service hours to the community.

“There’s a lot of things that can distinguish our education here at TAMIU:  our beautiful campus, our gifted faculty, challenging coursework and our fantastic Study Abroad program.  But, as students, we wanted to make a difference not only in ourselves, but in the community we call home.  For some of us, Laredo is our home… for others, it’s our home away from home. So, we decided that for our Celebration year we were going to go big and serve our community…and we’ve got 50,000 hours of ways we’re going to do just that,” Gutiérrez explained.

Mayra Hernández, director of the University’s Student Conduct and Community Engagement Office, said TAMIU’s student tradition of service is longstanding and this initiative is a worthy extension of that  tradition.

“Whether it’s through student clubs and organizations, service-learning, volunteer service and internships, or annual engagement efforts like The Big Event or Make a Difference Day, TAMIU students regularly give back to the community. From our student-athletes to student-faculty projects and more, service is deeply woven into our University’s fabric.

“In fact, TAMIU has been named to the President’s Higher Ed Community Service Honor Roll  twice. Since 2010, students have generated over  297,000 service hours with an in-kind monetary impact of  $6.5 million.  We think their idea to acknowledge the University’s milestone 50thAnniversary  with a year of service to the community is both inspiring and powerful,” Hernández said.
