Houston-based serigraphy artist Carlos Hernández has designed gig posters for artists like Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon, The Kills, Santana and more.

Now, he’ll be showcasing his artwork during an upcoming exhibit, “Poster Preach: The Gospel of Ink” at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).

The exhibit’s opening reception is Thursday, Aug. 29 from 6 – 8 p.m. at TAMIU’s Center for the Fine and Performing Arts’ Gallery. Before the reception, an Artist Talk is scheduled from 5 – 6 p.m. at the Sam Johnson Experimental Theater (Black Box Theater).

Both events are free and open to the public.

The exhibit serves as an opportunity for the community to view an array of show posters and illustrations.

“If you like any of the following - rock-n-roll music, graphic design, poster art, or printmaking, then this show and artist talk is going to knock your socks off,” said associate professor of art Jesse Shaw.

Artwork by Hernández has been featured in the Communication Arts Typography and Illustration annuals, as well as the 2012 book, Mexican Graphics by Korero Books-UK.

In 2013, he was selected as the official poster artist to design a commemorative poster for the Austin City Limits Music Festival.

He has worked with several national and international corporations including the Goode Company, Google, The Houston Chronicle, Lincoln Motor Company, Live Nation, the Miller Brewing Company, New West Records, and more.

Hernández serves as a founder of the Burning Bones Press, a printmaking studio situated in Houston. He has also served as a screen-printing instructor in the Department of Visual and Dramatic Arts at Rice University.

Hernández has participated in several exhibits including the Oso Bay Biennial Heavy Hitters Exhibition and the American Institute of Graphic Artists (AIGA) Texas Show. He has received awards from the AIGA, the American Advertising Federation, the Art Directors Club – Houston, and the American Marketing Association.

Additionally, he is a member of the internationally renowned Outlaw Printmakers.

Hernández holds a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design and Illustration from Texas Tech University.

The exhibit is on display through Friday, Sept. 6.

Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment.
