TAMIU Systems Engineering Students Complete Summer Research in Argentina

Dr. Tariq Tashtoush

Recently, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Engineering students returned from their first-ever study abroad program at the National University of Quilmes (UNQ) in Bernal City, Quilmes, Argentina.

The program, “Engineering Undergraduate Research Abroad,” was a joint effort between TAMIU and UNQ to support undergraduate student research. The initiative was sponsored through the 100,000 Strong in the Americas grant by Exxon Mobil.

Additionally, many TAMIU students benefit from funding and scholarship assistance for their Study Abroad program provided by the Guadalupe and Lilia Martínez Trust.

The six Systems Engineering students who traveled to the UNQ were Adalberto Flores, Luis García, Deyanira Gomez, Gerardo Landa, Brian Velasquez, and Raúl Zapata. Students were led by project coordinator and TAMIU assistant professor of Engineering Dr. Tariq Tashtoush.

Throughout their two-week stay in Argentina, the cohort worked alongside a student and faculty research team at UNQ. The teams focused on project topics such as robotics, automation, and its real-life application.

“The students were working with UNQ team on three different projects. Students and faculty from the UNQ team will be visiting TAMIU for two weeks and continue their collaboration,” explained Tashtoush.

Students from the UNQ are expected to visit the University on Oct. 12 and will stay at the University for two weeks to continue their collaboration.

“This is a great opportunity for us to expose our Engineering students to international research in robotics engineering and technology fields,” said Tashtoush.
