The Chronicle of Higher Education, the nation’s independent leader in higher education journalism, has determined that Laredo’s Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has earned a national ranking of Eighth among “Colleges with the Greatest Racial and Ethnic Diversity Among Faculty Members.”

The ranking for four-year public institutions appears in the Chronicle’s Almanac 2019 edition and measures data available for Fall 2017. Three Texas universities were ranked in the Top 10, including the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston at three, and the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley at nine. Some 662 four-year public institutions were reviewed. TAMIU was the highest ranked of the Texas A&M University System’s 11 regional campuses.

The ranking was based on a diversity index which indicates the probability, on a scale of 1 to 100, that any two full-time instructional faculty members at an institution are from different racial or ethnic groups.

TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz said that the ranking is reflective of the University’s determination to create a learning and teaching environment of diverse strength and voices.

“We are, after all, an international university, and should reflect the broad spectrum of human experience as we strive to create a diverse learning and teaching environment. Our faculty drive that experience and our students treasure this distinction in how we deliver our mission,” Dr. Arenaz said.

This Fall, TAMIU welcomed a diverse faculty of 27 new members with over 98% holding the highest terminal degree in their discipline, bringing additional depth and research expertise that furthers students’ TAMIU learning experience.

TAMIU is celebrating its 50th anniversary and its 25th anniversary at its north Laredo campus throughout 2019-2020. A dedicated website shares the University’s transformation from hybrid upper-level university to full doctoral degree-granting University. It includes a calendar of Anniversary events and more at tamiu.edu/50.
