Roll up your sleeves, grab your trowels, and come support Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Service-Learning Center Community Garden.

Volunteers are being sought to help fill 24 garden beds to prepare the garden for planting season. The Fall Bed Prep Day is happening Saturday, Oct. 5 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Community Garden, located behind the Kinesiology, Wellness and Recreation Center.

In addition to preparing the garden beds, volunteers will be working on beautifying the grapefruit trees that are in the garden by de-weeding, clearing their areas, and watering.

Around 40 volunteers are needed for the morning-long event. The volunteer event is open to the community, as well as TAMIU students.

The activity is part of a 50,000 Service-Hour Challenge, a student initiative that pledges to complete 50,000 service-hours throughout the University’s 50th Anniversary Celebration year.

University students can sign up and track their hours via Trailblazers at https://50.tamiu.edu/fallgarden-volunteers.

Cihtlalli Pérez, outreach coordinator, notes that this kick-off event for the Community Garden helps students learn more about sustainability and food production issues through a living, learning environment.

“Once we have soil in the beds, we will can start targeting student groups to engage with the garden and begin growing vegetables,” explained Pérez, “We hope that once we have the garden beds ready, we can create a system for students to utilize this green space to learn about various issues while growing healthy food.”
