TAMIU Joins DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Event Saturday

Student Center, TAMIU

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) will be one of 10 Laredo sites participating in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back, Saturday, October 26, 2019 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the west side parking lot, in front of the Student Center.

The Department of Human Resources and the DEA work together to sponsor the event twice a year, in the Fall and Spring, by hosting a drop off site on the TAMIU campus.  We encourage the campus community to dispose of expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs through the Take Back the Pill event.

The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches. This service is free and anonymous.  TAMIU is proud to work with the DEA to support this important initiative.

The program addresses a vital public safety and public health issue by providing a safe and convenient way to dispose of unused and expired drugs that may be sitting in your medicine cabinet at home.

The DEA maintains that studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.  In addition, Americans are now advised that usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash— pose potential safety and health hazards in our community.

In addition to TAMIU, other collection sites are scheduled at the following locations in Laredo, Cotulla, and Zapata, TX:

* KGNS-TV - 120 W Del Mar Boulevard

* Laredo Fire Depart. Admin Bldg. - 616 E. Del Mar Blvd

* Ryan Elementary - 2401 Clark Boulevard

* Laredo Public Library - 1120 E. Calton Road

* Martin High School - 2002 San Bernardo

* Laredo College South Campus-5500 S. Zapata Hwy.

* San Martin de Porres Church - 1704 Sandman St.

* Zapata Courthouse - Zapata, TX.

* Cotulla Courthouse - 101 Courthouse Sq., Cotulla, TX.
