TAMIU Hosts Silent Horror Classic Screening, Organ Improv Saturday

Nosferatu

Just in time for the Halloween season!

A silent film screening of the classic German Expressionist horror film, “Nosferatu” complete with organ accompaniment, is happening this Saturday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. at Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Recital Hall.

Admission to the event is free and open to the public.

TAMIU organist and assistant professor Dr. Colin Campbell will provide a live improvisation on the Sharkey Corrigan Pipe Organ.

The performance emulates how silent films were originally presented, usually with an orchestral or organ accompaniment.

The film was originally released in 1929 and was adapted from Bram Stoker’s classic “Dracula” by director F. W. Murnau.

It tells the story of Count Orlok who summons Thomas Hutter to his Transylvanian castle. It’s there that Orlok seeks to buy a house near Hutter and his wife, Ellen. After Orlok’s true vampire nature is revealed, Hutter struggles to escape the castle after realizing that Ellen is in grave danger.

Throughout the century, the film has been lauded for its technical perfection and visual style for its time. It holds a 97 percent “Certified Fresh” rating on the popular review website, Rotten Tomatoes and has been named one of the “100 Best Films of World Cinema” by Empire Magazine.

The event poster was designed and printed by TAMIU printmaking student Christian Terrazas. He is advised by Jesse Shaw, TAMIU associate professor of Art.
