Author, NPR Education Correspondent Anya Kamenetz Leads TAMIU Presidential Lecture Wednesday
Award-winning National Public Radio (NPR) education correspondent and author Anya Kamenetz will be the featured lecturer for Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) Presidential Lecture Series Wednesday, Nov. 6.
Kamenetz’ lecture will be “The Secrets to Success in College: Your Brain, Your Money and the Future.” The Lecture is free of charge and open to the public. It will be held in the Academic Innovation Center, room 126. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Kamenetz joined NPR in 2014, working as part of a new initiative coordinating on-air and online learning coverage. Since then, the NPR Ed team has been awarded the 2017 Edward R. Murrow Award for Innovation, and a 2015 National Award for Education Reporting for the multimedia national collaboration, The Grad Rates Project.
She is the author of several books and first gained national visibility at age 24 with her debut book, Generation Debt. Subsequent books have looked at student loans, innovations to address cost , quality and access to higher education. They have included DIY U: Edupunks, Edupreneurs, and the Coming Transformation of Higher Education, and The Test. Her latest is The Art of Screen Time: How Your Family Can Balance Digital Media and Real Life (PublicAffairs, 2018). It provides insight into how all can balance their screen usage.
Kamenetz previously covered innovation, sustainability, social entrepreneurship and technology as a staff writer for Fast Company magazine. She is a contributor to The New York Times, The Washington Post, New York Magazine and Slate. She has been featured in documentaries shown on PBS and CNN. The Huffington Post has called her an “Education Game Changer.”
From advances in assessment, effectively training talent and workforce training to helping students understand and manage debt to step up to become the next generation of leaders, Kamenetz engages with insightful perspective on the evolution of learning, education standards and reforms, and applying it all to advance one's purpose.
She grew up in Louisiana in a family she describes as “writers and mystics,” and graduated from Yale University in 2002. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two daughters.
Organized through TAMIU’s University College, the Presidential Lecture Series is an occasional University series that brings innovative creators and thinkers to the University in public lectures open to University students and the community at large. Recent past lecturers have included Dr. Mark Lilla, Dr. Tomas Jiménez, Nadine Strossen, Tatiana Clouthier, Dr. Renato Aguilera and Dr. Keith H. Pannell.
