TAMIU Art Students Create Printed Posters for Upcoming Campus Events

At a young age, Christian Terrazas knew he wanted to become an artist.

Now, Terrazas is part of a student-led initiative creating printmaking posters for upcoming events happening at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU).

The initiative is supported through the College of Arts and Sciences Fine and Performing Arts Department and Act on IDEAs – TAMIU’s Quality Enrichment Plan focused on developing applied critical thinking.

Terrazas, alongside fellow Art majors, have created several posters based on their own unique interpretation of an upcoming University event.

The senior art major first became interested in printmaking after taking courses with Jesse Shaw, TAMIU assistant professor of art.

“Mr. Shaw explained to me that printmaking can use any other work that you’ve created. While I consider myself an illustrator, he taught me that you can incorporate drawings you’ve created before, and continue printing them through a printmaking press,” Terrazas explained, noting  “Printmaking is not just painting or drawing – it’s merging those forms together to make a print.”

The idea was first inspired after visiting artist Carlos Hernández held an exhibit at TAMIU in September 2019.  A prominent commercial printmaker, Hernández creates print posters for international musicians and events such as Austin City Limits. After showcasing his prints, art students began to think of ways they could make their own event posters on campus.

Terrazas was asked to create event posters for a silent movie screening and organ improvisation horror films, “Nosferatu” and “The Phantom of the Opera.”

He noted that the posters are continually created by printmaking students, including the upcoming Senior Juried Art Show, ‘Parameters’ printed by Kassandra Romero.

Students will be showcasing and selling prints during the opening reception of the Senior Juried Art Show, Thursday, Nov. 21 from 5 - 7 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts Gallery. Funds support printmaking student projects.

Admission to the show is free and open to the public.

The exhibit is on display through Thursday, Dec. 5.

Gallery hours are Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. The Gallery will close in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday Wednesday, Nov. 27 at noon and re-open Monday, Dec. 2.

Throughout 2019-2020, TAMIU is celebrating its 50thanniversary and its 25thanniversary at its north Laredo campus.  A dedicated website shares the University’s transformation from a hybrid upper-level university to a full doctoral degree-granting University. The website traces the University’s history, shares its impact in personal stories and includes a calendar of Anniversary events and more at tamiu.edu/50.
