Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) chapter of the National Collegiate Hispanic Society, Sigma Delta Pi, initiated nine new members during a recent ceremony.

The new members include Elizabeth Aguirre, Asusena Badillo, Evelyn Huitrón, Ilse Denisse Marrufo, Jennifer Danae Martínez, Erik Muñoz, Nelly Priscila Toledo, Leocadia Villarreal, and Angélica Berenice Rocha.

The ceremony was led by student officers Itzamara Flores, president; Clarissa Moreno, treasurer; Gabriela Valadez, secretary; Mayra Can, member. Assisting were faculty advisors from the College of Arts and Sciences, department of Humanities,  Dr. Lola Orellano Norris, TAMIU associate professor, and Dr. Agustín Martínez-Samos, associate professor.

Active membership in the Society is selective and limited to students who have demonstrated high scholarship in their general academic courses and excellence in the study of Spanish.

The motto of Sigma Delta Pi is the Greek phrase, Spanías Didagéi Proágomen, or “Let’s go forth/continue forth under the teaching/guidance of the Spanish language.”  It celebrates its 100th Anniversary this year. The Centennial Celebration began in January and continues through June 30, 2020, with various activities highlighting Sigma Delta Pi’s history. The Society was established at the University of California, Berkeley in 1919 and  now has over 610 chapters in 49 states.

The Society’s Phi Xi chapter at TAMIU was founded in 2003 by then-Spanish faculty member, Dr. Ezra Engling. It is planning several activities at TAMIU to celebrate Sigma Delta Pi’s anniversary in conjunction with the University’s 50th Anniversary celebration.

“It will be a wonderful opportunity to highlight the beauty of the Spanish language and its importance for the Laredo community, but it will also allow us to emphasize the relevance of Spanish as one of the most important languages in the world today,”  Dr. Norris said.

Sigma Delta Pi’s chapter honors those who have attained excellence in the study of the Spanish language, resulting literature and cultures. It also recognizes those who have made Hispanic contributions to modern culture better known and  encourages college and university students to acquire a deeper understanding of Hispanic cultures.
