Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) is one of only 30 sites nationwide chosen by the College Board to offer teachers a Pre-AP Summer Institute (Pre-APSI) professional development opportunity this summer.

TAMIU’s Office of Continuing Education will offer the Pre-APSI July 6-10 at TAMIU’s campus. Registration for the Institute is currently underway. Seats are first-come, first-served and space is limited.

Michelle Begwin, TAMIU Continuing Education administrative associate, said the Pre-APSI is designed to prepare high school teachers for the Pre-Advancement Placement program that the College Board is launching this year. The program features 11 Pre-AP courses offered for high school students who wish to expand their knowledge and seek an opportunity to grow further in their academics.

The Pre-APSI is a four-day, collaborative experience that empowers educators to begin to prepare and plan for the Pre-AP course, Begwin explained.

The new Pre-AP courses deliver challenging, high-quality instruction for 9th and 10th grade classes through focused course frameworks, engaging instructional resources, and learning checkpoints that are back-mapped from AP expectations and the SAT system of assessments, according to the College Board. The courses provide students the opportunity to engage in grade-level content with built-in support for learners across varying levels of ability.

During the Pre-APSI, teachers explore course materials and experience model lessons from the students’ point of view, Begwin explained. They also work with peers to begin planning and building their own course materials, so they are ready on day one of instruction.

For more information about the Pre-APSI and to register, please contact Begwin at 956.326.2837, email michelle.begwin@tamiu.edu or visit offices located in the Student Center, room 118.

University office hours are 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
