In an historic visit, members of the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents will hold their quarterly meeting at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) this week, Feb. 5 – 7

TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz noted the visit’s significance.

“The Regents’ leadership and partnership has been critical to multiple TAMIU successes throughout our existence.  The Regents have previously visited TAMIU in 1997 and 2002. We are especially excited to welcome them to our campus during our milestone 50th Anniversary,” Dr. Arenaz said.

The 10-member Board is appointed by the Texas Governor and is chaired by Elaine Mendoza. Tim Leach is vice chairman.

The Regents will convene at 8 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6 at TAMIU’s Student Center. The Board will immediately recess to executive session.

The Board will reconvene in open session at approximately 2 p.m.  in the Student Center Ballroom to consider:

  • Approval of a resolution honoring the 50th Anniversary for Texas A&M International University
  • The Quiet Zone Project, which aims to use technology to eliminate or lessen train horn blasts going through four locations at the Texas A&M University campus: University Drive, Old Main Drive, Kimbrough, and George Bush Drive
  • A proposed hotel project on the Canyon campus of West Texas A&M University
  • A six year contract extension for the head football coach at Tarleton State University
  • A proposal to name a plaza at Texas A&M University-Commerce after the late president, Dan Jones.

Meetings of the Board of Regents of The Texas A&M University System are open to the public except for any posted executive session held in compliance with the Texas Open Meetings Act.

The Regents oversee the administration and set policy direction for the System’s  universities and state agencies; ensure a quality undergraduate and graduate education experience for all students; promote academic research and technology to benefit the state of Texas and the nation;  disseminate programs of the A&M System across the state through outreach and public service efforts, and support the state legislative and higher education leadership to position Texas at the forefront of higher education nationally.

The Texas A&M University System is one of the largest systems of higher education in the nation, with a budget of $6.3 billion. Through a statewide network of 11 universities, a comprehensive health science center, eight state agencies, and its RELLIS Campus, the Texas A&M System educates more than 153,000 students and makes more than 22 million additional educational contacts through service and outreach programs each year.

Members of the campus community and visitors should note that the visit by the Board of Regents will impact campus parking and should consider arriving earlier to secure parking.

TAMIU is celebrating its 50th Anniversary and its 25th Anniversary at its north Laredo campus throughout 2020. A dedicated website shares the University’s remarkable transformation from a hybrid upper-level University to a full doctoral degree-granting University with over 29,000 graduates worldwide that enrolls over 8,400 students.
