Visual Arts students at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) are taking their artwork to Instagram for a special, virtual showcase.

Beginning Friday, April 24 at 6 p.m., TAMIU’s Visual Arts Instagram account will post the artwork of its 16 senior art students as part of a digital offering of its “Yes. I AM an Artist.” exhibit.

Artwork will be uploaded in five-minute intervals and will ultimately reside on their Instagram feed. Instagram users will be able to view, like, comment and share artwork through their own social media channels.

This year’s TAMIU senior art students are Karla Castillo, Itzamara Cepeda, Mariana Cuevas Pérez, Jamie Gonzales, Gabriela Guerrero, Justin López, Julian Martínez, Mayra Morales, Michael Najr, Douglas Naudin, Rachel Quintero, Sarah Reyes, Yair Sánchez, Christian Terrazas, Esmeralda Treviño and Shaney Zamora.

“This current situation that we are in has presented all of the senior art students with unique problems to overcome in completing their work for an online exhibition. Many students have had to change their strategies and embrace the limitations of access to facilities and equipment, on top of the stress and uncertainty that I am sure we are all feeling right now,” said Jesse Shaw, TAMIU assistant professor of Art.

However, by showcasing the exhibit online, students are now posed with the unique opportunity to document their work in experimental ways that would not be seen in a typical gallery space, explained Shaw.

“In presenting the exhibition online, students have to be especially mindful of how they present their work because the way it is documented is going to control the way the work is experienced by the viewers,” he noted.

Currently, Instagram users can peruse the TAMIU Visual Arts Instagram account and view their ‘Artist of the Day’ feature to get a sneak-peak of student artwork that will be featured.

For more information on the exhibit, contact Shaw via email at jesse.shaw@tamiu.edu.

TAMIU students are completing this Spring semester online in the University’s Virtual Classroom. Registration for Maymester, Summer and Fall 2020 courses is now underway. An online catalog containing a list of nearly 100 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degree programs is at http://catalog.tamiu.edu

As part of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, TAMIU’s campus is closed only to the general public. Entry to campus continues for students, faculty, staff and those having legitimate reasons to be on campus. Online and virtual services at the University continue, practicing all CDC Guidelines on gathering, masking and social distancing and with most staff working remotely.  Office hours are subject to change and it is recommended that phone or email contact be made first to determine the office’s schedule of operation. An online directory is here.

The University’s dedicated COVID-19 website is updated daily and includes information on office schedules and services, an expansive FAQ, quick links, student resources, official information links and much more.
