TAMIU Names Dr. Torregosa Dean of College of Nursing and Health Sciences

Dr. Marivic Torregosa has been named Dean of the Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) College of Nursing and Health Sciences. 

TAMIU Provost Dr. Tom Mitchell shared news of Dr. Torregosa’s selection. 

“Dr. Torregosa  has led the College for a year now as Interim Dean and has done an outstanding job in meeting the challenges of this often difficult year. We are impressed with her innovative outlook, real-world nursing experience and visionary ability to marshal University and community resources to continue to strengthen the College’s nursing and health sciences’ legacy,” Dr. Mitchell said. 

Dr. Torregosa said she is honored to take on the College’s leadership and its commitment to advancing TAMIU’s mission  and response to local, regional and global health needs. 

“My vision for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences is to continue to advance the University’s mission. We want to expand our enrollment of our current programs and offer more options for a Master’s degrees in Nursing, Kinesiology, and Communication Disorders.

“The launching of our  programs such as our new online Master’s degree in Family Nursing Practice (FNP) and Bachelor’s degree in Public Health have proven incredibly timely in light of the tremendous need for health care providers as we all respond to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.  I am committed to seeing that the College continues to develop programs addressing local, regional and global health needs. We’re going to continue to support the research endeavors of our faculty to advance health science and guide our best practices in health and wellness. All of these are possible through the continuous support from our administration, community stakeholders and our Texas A&M University System,” Dr. Torregosa said. 

Prior to her appointment as Dean, Torregosa served as associate dean and director of MSN Programs.  She joined the College’s faculty in 2004.  

Her Ph.D. in Nursing was earned at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  Her Master’s of Science in Nursing was received from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi while her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing was earned at the University of Bohol, Philippines.

Torregosa has served as principal investigator on multi-million dollar grants including the TAMIU-Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for $1.17 million and the $2.3 million TAMIU Online FNP Program funded by the US Department of Education.

Her varied research interests include predictors of academic success, the importance of evidence-based curriculum, the role of undergraduate research and scholarship on learning and teaching, the sense of community and stroke recovery and ancestral health and its ongoing manifestations, among others.

She has been the recipient of the  Texas Academic Leadership Award 2019, TAMIU Distinguished Scholar of the Year 2017-18, named one of TAMIU’s Five Exceptional Women in Education 2017 and both Teacher of the Year and Scholar of the Year for the College of Nursing, 2015. 

In addition to an online RN to BSN degree, the College of Nursing and Health Sciences offers other nursing programs such as traditional BSN program, and BS programs in  Communication Disorders and Kinesiology Health Science. A Master’s in Nursing Administration (online), and the new MSN Online Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Program are also offered. The BSN and MSN programs have full accreditation from the Texas Board of Nursing and the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

As part of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, TAMIU’s campus is closed only to the general public. Entry to campus continues for students, faculty, staff and those having legitimate reasons to be on campus.
