TAMIU Puts New Texas A&M System Scholarship Fund to Work for Students
Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) president Dr. Pablo Arenaz says the new Texas A&M University System Board of Regents Scholarship Fund will bring approximately $528,000 for student use at TAMIU beginning this Fall.
TAMIU’s share is part of an overall $100 million scholarship program Regents approved for the 11 campuses of the A&M System last week.
“Our visionary Board of Regents have dedicated this program to address diversity issues and the concerns of students who are first-generation, or from low-income families in the wake of economic uncertainty associated with COVID-19, current unemployment rates and families’ depleted emergency savings. As our chairman, Elaine Mendoza noted, ‘historic challenges call for historic action’…and we’re ready to make some new history for students coming to TAMIU,” Dr. Arenaz said.
Arenaz said TAMIU’s share of the Scholarship Fund will focus on attracting new transfer students as well as first-time students to the University.
“We see these as areas of great need at the University. This Fund provides a strong mechanism to help ensure that students can complete degree plans in a timely manner, gain meaningful employment, and contribute to the great engine of success here in Laredo and across the State,” he explained.
Arenaz noted the challenge provided by A&M System Chancellor John Sharp.
“As he said, ‘The goal is to make the A&M System look like Texas.’ ”
The Fund, approved by the Regents in action June 15, provides $10 million annually over 10 years for scholarships. System member universities will also be engaged in fundraising to help support the effort.
Arenaz noted that the University intends to award these scholarships in time for the Fall 2020 semester, which gets underway Aug. 24, 2020.

TAMIU ranks 5th in the nation among the 100 Most Affordable Public Schools with the Highest Return on Investment (ROI), according to ranking authority Great Value Colleges. U.S. News and World Report’s 2020 Edition of its popular Best Colleges guide ranks TAMIU as the second highest-ranked Texas public university in its Best Regional Universities West category and the highest-ranked regional campus of the Texas A&M University System.
Most recently, TAMIU earned a top tier ranking for its COVID-19 response. The 2020 Educate to Career (ETC) College ranking placed TAMIU in Tier I for colleges and universities that have responded to the pandemic in ways that benefit and protect students, especially in terms of available online learning resources. Some 1200 colleges across the nation were reviewed.
As part of its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, TAMIU’s campus is closed only to the general public. Entry to campus continues for students, faculty, staff and those having legitimate reasons to be on campus. Online and virtual services at the University continue, practicing all CDC Guidelines on gathering, masking and social distancing and with most staff working remotely.
