As the Fall semester quickly approaches, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) students have a powerful support system in the University Learning Center (ULC), which assists them with various learning needs, including tutoring services.

Pablo Morales, TAMIU Learning Center director, said students should take a proactive approach when accessing ULC services.

“Visiting the ULC early in the semester, either on the first or second week of classes, or attending supplemental instruction sessions can be critical and can yield positive results for students when it comes to their final grades,” Morales said.

The ULC is a student driven center committed to providing the campus community with an array of academic support programs such as one-on-one tutoring, supplemental instruction, group tutoring and exam preparation workshops, Morales explained. In addition to these services, the ULC offers students flexible scheduling hours, a supportive learning environment, and learning assistance models focused on student development student-centered learning strategies.

“All current students registered at TAMIU can access the ULC,” Morales said, “Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to access the Center at any time during hours or operation.”

The ULC operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and no appointment is required.

To access the ULC services in person or online, students need to check in to the Center through the TAMIU Net Check In App, available for download on iOS or Android platforms, Morales said.

“Students can also attend scheduled supplemental instruction sessions through their respective courses,” Morales said, “Supplemental Instruction (SI) is geared to assist students succeed in historically difficult courses, integrating ‘what to learn’ with ‘how to learn’ through weekly SI sessions.”

Students who regularly attend SI can improve their grade one-half to a full letter grade higher than those who do not participate, Morales said.

The ULC employs 20-25 tutors. They include both graduate and undergraduate students.

Peer tutoring is also available for the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Accounting, History, Political Science and Computer Programming.

Tutoring improves students’ understanding of course material and increases their confidence and self-efficacy, Morales explained.

“Students who access the ULC increase their chances to successfully complete their course with a higher grade,” he said, “At the same time, the ULC tutors support, encourage, and motivate students to apply the concepts learned in each session as the basis for developing critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills.

The ULC ensures all TAMIU students develop an educational compass so they may experience academic growth, accomplish their educational goals, and ultimately, take responsibility for their own academic success, Morales concluded.
