The Consulate General of México and Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) have affirmed their continued support of the Institute of Mexicans in the Exterior (IME) BECAS Program at TAMIU.

On Friday, Sept. 18, Consul General of México in Laredo Juan Carlos Mendoza Sánchez and TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) affirming their commitment to the IME-BECAS Program.

This year, the IME-BECAS Program received a total of $30,500 in scholarship funds donated by community partners and individual donors, including the Consulado General De México en Laredo, Ermilo Richer – Richer Agencia Aduanal, the Mexican Cultural Institute of Laredo, the International Bank of Commerce and the Association of Logistics and Forwarding Agents, Inc.

The IME-BECAS Program has awarded a total of $174,700 in scholarship funds between the Consulate and TAMIU’s matching funds.

Initially established in 2013, the IME-BECAS Program supports Mexican students residing abroad in the United States by providing them with additional educational resources, noted Consul General Mendoza Sánchez.

“The Consulate General of Mexico in Laredo is convinced that the best asset for Latino communities in the United States is a college education, which will pave the way for lifelong learning and a high quality of life,” explained Mendoza Sánchez.

Through the Program, the Government of México gives high priority to serve the Mexican population living abroad in the United States by providing educational resources.

IME BECAS recognizes the importance of Mexicans working or studying in the United States to participate in educational programs that facilitate their development and ensure the continuity of their education.

Each year, the scholarship is made available to both undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at TAMIU. They are required to submit proof of Mexican citizenship, enrolled full-time, maintain an overall GPA of 2.75 or greater or submit a high school GPA of 3.0 or greater for any incoming freshman students.
