TAMIU Dance Students Offer Livestreamed Dance Performances

Dance Students

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) dance students will perform in a series of historic livestreamed dance performances, happening Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Tickets are available for the “Dis-Dance Outback” livestreamed dance performance and can be purchased at https://secure.touchnet.com/C20208_ustores/web/store_main.jsp?STOREID=53

Once a ticket is purchased, individuals will receive a WebEx Live link to the livestreamed dance performance. Individuals are encouraged to download the WebEx application prior to the viewing. WebEx is available for download for both Android and iPhone devices, and can also be accessed through your device’s web browser.

The livestreamed dance performance features outdoor, site-specific dances in various genres, including ballet, ballet folklórico, modern and improvised dance. Performances include dances choreographed by University dance students, as well as faculty members and instructors Jee Eun Ahn, Timothy Rubel, and Nayeli Lopez.

The performances feature music by DJ Rizu-X, as well as costumes by Geraldine Rojas.

Rubel, an assistant professor of Dance, noted that the performances are a unique opportunity to showcase a semester’s worth of dance preparation culminating in a special, socially-distanced, outdoor dance performance.

“Students have been rehearsing for several weeks either in class or separate rehearsals with their choreographers. This show is completely inspired by the spaces the dancers are performing in and promises to be a dance performance like none previously seen on TAMIU's campus,” said Rubel.

The livestreamed dance performance is one of several ways the University has adapted to ongoing social distancing guidelines. Additional performances that have been livestreamed through social media thus far include several student musical recitals.

The University currently offers a minor in Dance. Students can take courses in several genres and are also required to enroll in courses in improvisation, dance history, concert choreography and dance conditioning.
