Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) College of Education has received official notification that the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) has renewed its approval of TAMIU continuing to operate as approved Educator Preparation Program (EPP) in Texas for five years.

Tam Jones, director of Educator Preparation, lauded the College’s performance.

“We congratulate you on your work and recognize that this accomplishment comes as the result of the time, energy, and effort you and your staff invested to reach this point.  We look forward to continuing to work with you in the goal to have educators prepared on day one to serve Texas students effectively,” Jones wrote.

TAMIU College of Education Dean Dr. James O’Meara said the College is pleased with the renewal.

“We’re very happy to receive this notice of approval.  TAMIU’s teacher preparation program equips students with knowledge and practical problem-solving skills that transcend books and classrooms.

“We are an international University that impacts this community by preparing career educators,” O’Meara said, “Every year, we ready 100 percent of the traditionally prepared teachers working in a 100-mile radius of the campus. Eighty percent of those typically stay in the classroom for 10 or more years.”

He said TAMIU plays a major role in  sustaining the quality teacher pipeline that fuels South Texas’ success stories.

“Teachers have a remarkable charge, unlike any other profession.  It is noble and it is good and it changes lives daily.  At the end of the day, every teacher knows that he or she has made a difference.  We have only to look at each of our own lives to know and understand the transformative difference a teacher can make.  TAMIU is committed to recruiting, supporting and retaining teachers and principals to continue to make that cherished difference,” O’Meara concluded.

TAMIU is part of a Texas A&M University System state-wide campaign focused on encouraging consideration of teaching careers.  The 11 universities of the A&M System produce more fully certified teachers than any other university system in Texas.
