TAMIU CARES, CRSAA Applications Close
Applications have closed for Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) student financial assistance from either TAMIU CARES or federal Coronavirus Relief Response Supplemental Appropriations (CRRSAA) relief funds.
Applications closed Monday, March 1, 2021 at 3 p.m.
Students enrolled for Spring 2021 classes and meeting selection criteria can benefit from an additional $3 million from existing TAMIU CARES and CRRSAA funding announced last month.
Questions can be directed to cares@tamiu.edu. Due to significant volume of emails, students may experience a delay in response.
TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz said that the relief provided by CARES funding and by additional CRRSAA funding is dramatic.
“Our students and their families have been severely impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic. For many, this funding has enabled them to continue their degree progress and not leave the University,” Dr. Arenaz noted.
Under CRRSAA guidelines, funding will also now support students enrolled in exclusively online classes, Arenaz said.
“The CARES Act funding did not previously anticipate the impact of the Pandemic on students in online programs, and CRRSAA funding will help address that. A growing number of TAMIU students are enrolled in completely online degree programs, so this will be of tremendous help to them,” he noted.
Recently, Congressman Henry Cuellar (’82) joined president Arenaz to help encourage participation in the CARES-CRRSAA funding.
Cong. Cuellar congratulated Arenaz on the campus’ stewardship of CARES and CRRSAA grants.
“Through CARES Act funding, TAMIU has awarded $5.1 million in emergency grants to assist students and is anticipating awarding up to an additional $3 million this semester alone with CRRSAA support with more for summer and fall. The University will receive around $17 million in CRRSAA funds. More than $10 million of TAMIU’s total funds have been designated for student emergency aid grants.
“To meet the demands of their students, TAMIU continues to go above and beyond and I’d like to thank Dr. Arenaz for his leadership as well as all the University’s faculty and staff for their commitment to helping students and their families overcome these challenging times,” Cuellar concluded.
CRRSAA funding comes from the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund II authorized by the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2021 Public Law 116-260, signed into law by former president Trump on Dec. 27, 2020. In total, it authorizes $81.88 billion in support of education, in addition to the $30.75 billion former Education Secretary DeVos provided last spring through the CARES Act, Public Law 116-13.
