Texas A&M International University’s Police Department (TAMIU PD) has achieved a program-defining award designation as a “Recognized Law Enforcement Agency” from the Texas Police Chiefs Association Law Enforcement Recognition Program. In doing so, it becomes the first agency in the City of Laredo to earn the coveted status.

TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz commended the accomplishment  of the TAMIU PD, led by Fructuoso San Miguel, TAMIU PD chief of police.

“This is an impressive accomplishment that further distinguishes our University and the community we so proudly serve,” Dr. Arenaz noted, “We commend Chief San Miguel and all of our fine officers and civilian employees for having earned this prestigious designation. He has set an enviable standard for the law enforcement community.”

The Award is based upon an evaluation of the TAMIU PD’s compliance with over 170 Best Business Practices for Texas Law Enforcement.  These Best Practices were carefully developed by Texas Law Enforcement professionals to assist agencies in the efficient and effective delivery of service and the protection of individuals’ rights. They cover all aspects of law enforcement operations including use of force, protection of citizen rights, vehicle pursuits, property and evidence management, and patrol and investigative operations.

In order to be considered for the Award designation, TAMIU PD had to undergo this voluntary process, including a lengthy critical self-review of the agency’s policies, procedures, facilities and operations.

TAMIU PD began the process in May 2017. Upon internal review completion, an outside audit and review was requested.  A final, virtual on-site review conducted by trained Police Chiefs from across Texas took place in early January 2021 and was then sent to the Texas Police Chiefs Association’s Recognition Committee for final analysis and decision to award “Recognized” status.

TAMIU  PD was then notified  it had been awarded the coveted “Recognized Law Enforcement Agency” Award, one of only 173 law enforcement agencies in the State of Texas to have earned the Award.

Chief San Miguel said he’s most proud of the Award and the independent review that guides the selection of those worthy of the Award and designation.

“The TAMIU Police Department has always considered itself to be one of the best in the State.  This process affirmed that, through an independent and rigorous review of the department’s operations.  I’m proud of our department’s performance.  I believe that this  should truly assure all members of our growing TAMIU community that its Police Department conforms to the highest current law enforcement standards,  delivering the best practices expected in all its services,” Chief San Miguel said.

The TAMIU PD  is committed to providing the University community with a safe and secure learning and working environment by providing the highest quality police services, which include prompt response, availability of officers and informational and instructional services, he noted.
