Middle and high school students with a growing interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics have applied to Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) online TexPREP program.

Registration has closed  for the four-week online summer program. Individuals were encouraged to apply at https://www.tamiu.edu/precollege/texprep/index.shtml. Application deadline was Friday, March 12, 2021.

This year’s enrichment program takes place virtually June 7 through July 1, 2021. Students will log in and meet Monday - Thursday from 1 - 4 p.m.

The online TexPREP program aims to increase the number of underrepresented minority and female students from the TexPREP area who will ultimately pursue science, mathematics, engineering and technology studies in college.

Mirian Granados, TAMIU TexPREP program director, noted the benefit of TexPREP and its potential to help students interested in future STEM-related careers.

“The University’s TexPREP program offers a highly-structured curriculum and fosters higher order thinking skills and innovation. The primary goal of TexPREP is to improve access to careers in Mathematics, Sciences, and Engineering. In order to achieve this goal, the program includes academics, career awareness and an opportunity to meet individuals with the same interest. We have adapted the curriculum and will be offering the program fully online this summer,” said Granados.

The TexPREP program seeks to reinforce the mathematics preparation of these students, as well as increase the retention rate of these students in college. Ultimately, students will be better acquainted with professional opportunities in science, mathematics, engineering and technology.

Program entrance is limited to 100 participants. After submitting an online application and all required documentation, applicants take a pre-test exam to further gauge their selection into the program.

Applicants should be incoming sixth to eighth graders, a freshman or a sophomore high school student. They should receive an 80 or higher course average in Math, Science and English, while also remaining in good academic standing in all other coursework.

Additionally, applicants will need to obtain a nomination from one teacher and should also demonstrate satisfactory conduct.

A $30 assessment fee was required for all interested individuals. After admittance, program participants pay a $100 program fee.
