TAMIU Student, Faculty Member Invited to NSF-Funded Summer Cybersecurity Program

Marshall Moncivais

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Engineering student Marshall Moncivais, alongside Dr. Mustafa Al Lail, TAMIU assistant professor of Computer Science and Engineering, have been chosen to participate in an upcoming national cybersecurity workshop.

The nine-week summer program, “Research Experience for Undergraduates at Columbus State University, (or REU@CSU) in Security and Privacy for Mobile Sensing and the Internet of Things” is funded through the National Science Foundation (NSF)  and  is focused on  research of issues related to security and  privacy, authentication, data integrity and malware of mobile applications.

During the summer program, Moncivais will focus on a research project that will be the subject of a potential journal article. Moncivais will be co-mentored by Dr. Al Lail and by Dr. Alfredo Perez, associate professor of Computer Science at CSU.

Before his acceptance to REU@CSU, Moncivais assisted in the completion of a scholarly publication, “Towards a Software System for Spatio-Temporal Authorization,” which was presented at the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges South Central Conference.

His poster presentation, “Software for Incorporating Time and Location into Access Control Decisions,” which was crafted alongside TAMIU students Miguelangel Treviño and Carlos Delgado, was also featured during Texas Undergraduate Research Day.

“These research results showed REU@CSU how valuable a researcher Marshall can be, which contributed to his acceptance into the program,” noted Al Lail.

Moncivais, who plans to graduate in Summer 2022, hopes to earn a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, along with a minor in Computer Science.

Recently, the University has added both a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering.

The B.S. in Computer Engineering offers a variety of courses ranging from Algorithms and Data Structure, Computer Security, Data Communication, Digital Logic Design, Embedded Systems, Fundamentals of Programming, among others. The University also offers a minor in Computer Science.

Additionally, the University had been offering an ABET-accredited degree program in Systems Engineering since 2008, along with an extensive pre-engineering curriculum. The University works with teams of student engineers working in faculty research collaborations that  have routinely placed in local, state and national competitions. They have also created seven distinct student clubs and organizations that provide additional service and rich collaborative opportunities.
