TAMIU Engineering Prof Named Award Recipient at TEES Conference

Dr. Deepak Ganta

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) assistant professor of Electrical Engineering Dr. Deepak Ganta recently took the second-place award at the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) Conference.

During the TEES Conference, a total of 20 teams vied for the top spots, with each team made up of Engineering professors from throughout A&M System schools.

Dr. Ganta, alongside Dr. Sunil Khatri, professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Texas A&M University, presented a three-minute project pitch to a panel of judges made up of university deans, vice-chancellors and engineering industry leaders. The successful pitch earned a $5,000 award that will assist their ongoing research efforts.

Their project pitch, “Internet-of-Clothing: Wearable Wireless Energy and Smart Sensors,” focused on clothing-based sensing and transmission devices. Using clothing-based sensors, the project aims to use these devices to wirelessly communicate data to a central hub.

“In our proposal, an infrared laser, placed in a central hub, will power a flexible photoreceiver/sensor/transmitter patch that is attached to the clothing. The energy received by the patch from the hub will power the sensor, and the collected sensor data will be communicated back to the hub by way of IR diodes,” explained Ganta.

Through the development of this sensor-based, smart-textiles technology, the goal is to assist health care efforts by providing continuous, secure health monitoring, particularly for elderly citizens. The project includes the creation of new technologies, including a novel wireless, battery-less clothing patch, as well as a significant artificial intelligence approach for sensor data processing and remote monitoring.

“The proposed platform closes the knowledge gap between the areas of IoT (Internet of Things), wireless energy transfer, smart-textiles, requiring interdisciplinary scientific innovations and significantly impacting the leadership of Texas and the U.S. in this growing and important area of research,” Ganta reiterated.

Ganta received his Ph.D. in Photonics (Engineering Science) and a Master of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Oklahoma State University. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at the University of Madras in Chennai, India.

He has served as a faculty member at TAMIU since 2015.  While at TAMIU, Ganta has published his research in several peer-reviewed journal publications and contributed three book chapters. He has also contributed to several grant opportunities while at the University.
