Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) TRiO Student Support Services (TRiO SSS) recently commemorated their 20th Anniversary with a special ceremony honoring program students.

During their 20th Annual Awards Dinner, held Saturday, Aug. 28, over 40 TAMIU students were recognized for their academic achievements and participation in the TRiO program throughout the 2020-21 academic year.

TRiO program students from the 2019-2020 academic semester who did not take part in the annual recognition ceremony due to COVID-19 Pandemic restrictions were also invited to attend.

Several students were recognized with an Academic Excellence Award for receiving a GPA between 3.51 - 4.0. Recipients included Lesly Carmona, Joy Davis, Fatima Ibarra, Rodolfo Morales and Ever Palacios.

Additionally, students earning a GPA between a 3.0 and 3.5 received the Academic Achievement Award. This year’s recipients were Cesar Rodrigo Guerra, Mitzy Juarez, María Guadalupe Moreno, Haziel Mota, Marco Ortiz, Ana Toscano and Erestina Vela.

During the awards ceremony, several University and TRiO program alumni were present to share testimonials, including Alejandro Costabella (’06, ’21), a TRiO program alumna who graduated as part of the University’s first TRiO program cohort. Costabella earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and a Master of Science degree in Educational Administration.

Other alumni present at the event included Brenda E. Briones (’05, ’15), who earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Science degree in School Counseling; Hilda L. Enriquez Escalante (’06, ’21), who earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Master of Science in Nursing Administration; and Juan J. Vegas (’06), who received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Additional events are planned throughout the academic year, including workshop opportunities by TRiO alumni and a National First-Generation Day event in November.

The University’s TRiO programs are funded by the U.S. Department of Education and provide academic assistance to eligible undergraduate students. A second TRiO program focused on the STEM-fields is also available at the University.

Through the programs, students receive additional tutoring, counseling, academic coaching, mentoring, and support services to low-income, first-generation, or students with disabilities. The TRiO programs work to increase retention and graduation rates while fostering an institutional climate supportive of the success of every program participant.
