In an impressive new ranking, Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) has been identified as the Least Expensive Public College/University in Texas by Student Loan Hero, a LendingTree® company.

Student Loan Hero’s researchers analyzed data from over 1,800 colleges and universities that enrolled at least 1,000 students and granted primarily Bachelor’s degrees.

Analysts then identified the most and least expensive public and private colleges by net price.  They define net price as what students actually pay, on average, to attend a college/university, including tuition, fees, and supplies, minus financial aid, scholarships, and grants — at schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Their team identified TAMIU’s net price as $3,074, the lowest among public schools in the State of Texas. The most expensive public school was identified as Texas Southern University in Houston ($19,340).  According to Student Loan Hero, the least expensive private school was Huston-Tillotson University in Austin ($16,775), while the most expensive private school was Texas Christian University in Fort Worth ($36,811).

TAMIU president Dr. Pablo Arenaz said the ranking underscores the University’s commitment to accessibility and excellence.

“This ranking is not a surprise to us.  We work diligently to keep student costs down through innovative programming and services – while never sacrificing our delivery of an excellent education for our students.  While this ranking affirms this, it also serves to renew our commitment to continuing to ‘Go Beyond,’ as we always say.  I hope parents of our future students will keep this commitment in mind as they explore higher education options available to them,” Dr. Arenaz said.

Among overall national findings, the authors note that public colleges and universities vary widely in net price, but not nearly as much as the gaps between public and private institutions.  They identify California as having the largest gap, some $18,000+, between California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo ($21,595) and California State University-Los Angeles ($2,768).

The ranking authors conclude that the net price of an education is an investment, and individuals should think about how much they might gain or lose in potential earnings considering what they study and where.  They also note that “throwing money at a big-name school” might not be the best learning environment for all.

Student Loan Hero was founded in 2012 by Andy Josuweit and was acquired by LendingTree in 2018.
