TAMIU Flamenco Students Perform
at National Conference in Tampa

Texas A&M International University’s advanced, intermediate and beginner flamenco students set off to Tampa, Fla., this week where they will perform at the Southern District American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Kaleidoscope Gala Dance Concert, this Thursday.

“The 15 TAMIU students will perform in two informal Dance on the Spot (D.O.T.S.) performances. The pieces selected encompass a wide range of Spanish dance from classical to traditional to new,” said Bede Leyendecker, chair, TAMIU department for the Fine and Performing Arts.

The artistically created adjudicated concert will include performances by the best dance companies from schools and universities.

“The concert will feature special guest artists, Brigham Young University Ballroom Dance Company,” according to the AAHPERD website.

The pieces performed by the TAMIU students will include “La Negra Tomasa,” “Baila Maria,” “La Leyenda del Beso,” “El Baile de Luis Alonzo,” “Andaluz and Volare.” The advanced students were also selected through adjudication to perform “Alegrias” for the Kaleidoscope concert.

The advanced group includes Prisma Alvarado, Aida Natalia Arandia, Alejandra Davalos, Griselda Dozal, Dianelle Martínez, Selina Martínez, Lisa Muñoz, and Laura Sánchez. Students in the beginner and intermediate group are Genesis Cardenas, Lucero de la Fuente, Jennifer Eaken, Ricardo Holguin, Christina Rone, and Celeste Zamarrón.

The group will also enjoy a day trip to Disney World in Orlando before returning to Laredo.

The dance concert is endorsed by the National Dance Association.
