TAMIU Camps for Children:
Learn About Rocket Science, Planets

Texas A&M International University’s Lamar Bruni Vergara Planetarium will conduct fun and mind-stimulating camps in June and July that will cover subjects ranging from rocket science to planet composition.

Designed for children ages 7 to 10, camps will be on June 25, July 9 and July 23 and cost  $15 each. Hours are 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Gerardo Pérez, Planetarium director, said all sessions were developed using National Science Education standards that include learning objectives for grades K-4 and 5-8. They contain math, technology and English Language components, he added.

“Everything in the camps is designed based on their age,” Pérez said,  “Since children are out of school for the summer, these camps will help keep their minds busy and not to forget all the information that they have been learning in their classrooms throughout the year.”

Camp dates and descriptions follow:

June 25 -  3, 2, 1 … Blast Off!  Objective: Learn simple rocket science. Students will explore how a rocket works and to demonstrate Newton’s Third Law of Motion; gather data and show results.

July 9 - Planet Party! Objective: Learn about our place in space. Students will explore the Solar System and learn and discover new facts about each planet and their natural satellites. Learn about distances and orbits.

July 23 - Far Out ... What is Out there? Objective: Learn about what makes a planet an earth-like planet. Explore extra solar planets, dwarf planets, comets, asteroids, and black holes.
