TAMIU Rec Sports Group Fitness offers a wide selection of fitness classes for an array of fitness levels. Whether you're an experienced fitness enthusiast or a beginner, our fun and energetic team of instructors will help you in your fitness journey. All fitness classes, except for specialty classes, are FREE for Rec Sports members; all students are members.

Group Fitness Class Descriptions
Find the right class for you
You can command power, strength and agility with this military inspired circuit workout that will push you to your limits. As you maneuver your way through each workout station, you’ll lunge, crunch, box and more for a full body workout. In the end, you’ll leave class feeling exhilarated. Boot Camp classes take place both indoors and outdoors. Come prepared to get fit done!
Belly Butt & Thighs (BBT)
This low body workout targets your belly butts and thighs like never before. BBT uses the BOSU ball along with core and stability techniques to strengthen and tone the belly butts and thighs.
Big, Buff, & Beautiful
You're already beautiful! Now it's time to get Big and Buff. Join us for 60 minutes of gnarly weight training. You'll push, you'll jump, you'll pull yourself into a stronger you.
An all level barre workout designed to safely trim, tighten and tone your entire body. Typically focus on small pulsing movements with emphasis on form, alignment and core engagement. By using small, controlled movements, isometric holds and high repetition, you can develop a strong, long, and lean physique in record time. Expect to use gliders, hand weights, fit ball, and resistance bands. This class finishes with a gentle stretching and a light cool down.
Mind & Body
Mind & Body aims to improve one’s overall core fitness and balance. Mind & Body provides various combinations of stretches using our most important piece of equipment: our body. This class is aimed to increase flexibility and correct body posture all while de-stressing. Leave it all behind. Come to reach and flex your mind and body.
Vinyasa Yoga- An all level non heated class. Vinyasa is a style of yoga characterized by stringing postures together so that you move from one to another, seamlessly and safely, using breath. More advanced variations are offered in addition to adaptations and modifications for beginners or for those yogis with injuries and limitations. Class includes a broad range of poses, including standing and balancing postures, twists, backbends, inversions, seated poses, and forward folds. Your heart will get pumping and your muscles will get thumping. Release your stress, lose weight, improve your flexibility and build strength throughout your body all in 1 hour. No class is the same, but every class will end with Corpse Pose (Savasana), the final relaxation posture.
A total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome each time you leave class.
Cycling/ Flow Ride
Want to increase your cardiovascular fitness, increase your muscle strength and flexibility, and burn some major calories while having fun? Now you can!
HIIT is a high intensity interval training class designed to push your body to its absolute max. With high reps and low-recovery time, this extreme full-body workout will challenge your body and mind! Come and take the challenge!
is a weight training class that incorporates regular group fitness equipment such as kettlebells, battle ropes, resistance bands and medicine balls as well as weight room equipment such as barbells, dumbbells, weighted plates, and machines. Pump it works on strength, stability, and the physical stamina needed for you to unleash your inner beast.
Cardio and Toning (CAT)
Combines resistance and cardiovascular training to improve participants' endurance, strength, and overall fitness level. CAT follows an interval training format which perfectly blends strength and cardio into powerful full-body workout. Come push your body to its limit!

Women on Weights (Spring 2020)
Women on Weights is 14-week program which helps women of various fitness levels master the weight room and learn life-changing techniques that promote a healthy lifestyle. Space is limited.
Are you looking to strengthen both your body and mind? Look no further. Yo! Get Fit is the class for you. Hannah will take you on an hour journey that will help you improve your overall fitness. The class includes holding challenging poses and other core strengthening techniques and it recommended for participants looking to improve their overall stability, balance and flexibility.

Why become a TAMIU Rec Sports Fitness Instructor?
Well, we are glad you asked. Whether you're majoring in Kinesiology or Sociology, becoming a group fitness instructor helps you develop various transferable skills that are applicable to any field. Not only are group fitness instructors able to set their own flexible schedules, they are also paid well-above minimum wage. Not bad for a college job. Most importantly, as a group fitness instructor, you'll be guiding, educating, and empowering your fellow students, faculty and staff members into leading a healthy lifestyle. oh and did we mention? Being a fitness instructor is fun. You're literally getting paid to exercise and interact with a diverse population.
What do I need to become a TAMIU Rec Sports Fitness Group Instructor?
To become a Tamiu Rec Sports Fitness Instructor you need A nationally-recognized Group Fitness certification such as ACE or AFAA, CPR Certification, 8 shadowing hours, and a demo. For more information, please contact Gabriel Rodriguez or Juan G. Perez.
What is Group Fitness?
Group Fitness classes are classes offered at locations such as gyms or fitness centers where a group of people meet a specified period of time, and led by an instructor in completing various exercises.
What does a Group Fitness Instructor do?
A fitness instructor leads, instructs, and motivates groups in exercise activities including cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and stretching.
