General Information

TAMIU Rec Sports Group Fitness offers a wide selection of fitness classes for an array of fitness levels. Whether you're an experienced fitness enthusiast or a beginner, our fun and energetic team of instructors will help you in your fitness journey. All fitness classes, except for specialty classes, are FREE for Rec Sports members; all students are members.

Group Fitness Class Descriptions

Find the right class for you

Boot Camp

You can command Power, Strength and Agility with this military inspired circuit workout that will push you to your limits. As you maneuver your way through each workout station, you’ll lunge, crunch, box and more for a full body workout. In the end, you’ll leave class feeling exhilarated. Boot Camp classes take place both indoors and outdoors. Come prepared to get fit done!

Belly Butt & Thighs (BBT)

is a class dedicated to your belly butt and thighs. BBT uses the BOSU ball along with core and stability techniques to strengthen and tone the belly butts and thighs.

Cardio Kickboxing

is the perfect blend of martial art techniques and fast-paced cardio. High-energy workout challenge beginners and the well-seasoned fitness guru alike. Build stamina, improve coordination and flexibility all while you burn calories and build lean muscle. 

Strong ® by Zumba

is a revolutionary high intensity workout led by music to help you make it to the last rep and maybe even five more. Do you have what it takes?

Mind & Body

aims to improve one’s overall core fitness and balance. Reach & Flex provides various combinations of stretches using our most important piece of equipment: our body. This class is aimed to increase flexibility and correct body posture all while de-stressing. Leave it all behind. Come to reach and flex your mind and body.

 

Zumba Toning®

An exciting, Latin inspired, dance 'n tone program. This is the original dance-fitness class taken to the next level. Zumba Toning is an innovative muscle training program with the addition of light weights. Created to emphasize muscles work along with rhythms, this combination of cardio and dynamic resistive exercises is an effective us of progressive light weight training to improve overall performance.

Zumba Fitness®

A total workout, combining all elements of fitness – cardio, muscle conditioning, balance and flexibility, boosted energy and a serious dose of awesome each time you leave class.

Cycling

Want to increase your cardiovascular fitness, increase your muscle strength and flexibility, and burn some major calories while having fun? Now you can! Join Frank for Cycling.

HYPE 360º

Hype 360° is a high intensity interval training class designed to push your body to its absolute max. With high reps and low-recovery time, this extreme full-body workout will challenge your body and mind! Come and take the challenge!

Iron Addicts

is a weight training class that incorporates regular group fitness equipment such as kettlebells, battle ropes, resistance bands and medicine balls as well as weight room equipment such as barbells, dumbbells, weighted plates, and machines. Iron addicts works on strength, stability, and the physical stamina needed for you to unleash your inner beast.

 

 

Total Body Conditioning (TBC)

Combines resistance and cardiovascular training to improve participants' endurance, strength, and overall fitness level. TBC follows an interval training format which perfectly blends strength and cardio into powerful full-body workout. Come push your body to its limit!

Pi Fitness

aims to push your body to perform at its absolute best. This fast-paced interval training class is anything but ordinary. Xcaret  combines a series of exercises that range from martial arts to pilates. We know that changes don't happen overnight, so commitment is a key element to your transformation. Train smarter. Perform better.

Power Ball Fitness

is a balance and stability class that works out the entire body. This class utilizes all your major muscle groups mainly using the stability ball and minimal fitness equipment. The class is recommended for all fitness levels.

Women on Weights

Women on Weights is 14-week program which helps women of various fitness levels master the weight room and learn life-changing techniques that promote a healthy lifestyle. Space is limited.

Yo! Get Fit

Are you looking to strengthen both your body and mind? Look no further. Yo! Get Fit is the class for you. Hannah will take you on an hour journey that will help you improve your overall fitness. The class includes holding challenging poses and other core strengthening techniques and it recommended for participants looking to improve their overall stability, balance and flexibility.

Why become a TAMIU Rec Sports Fitness Instructor?

Well, we are glad you asked. Whether you're majoring in Kinesiology or Sociology, becoming a group fitness instructor helps you develop various transferable skills that are applicable to any field. Not only are group fitness instructors able to set their own flexible schedules, they are also paid well-above minimum wage. Not bad for a college job. Most importantly, as a group fitness instructor, you'll be guiding, educating, and empowering your fellow students, faculty and staff members into leading a healthy lifestyle. oh and did we mention? Being a fitness instructor is fun. You're literally getting paid to exercise and interact with a diverse population.

What do I need to become a TAMIU Rec Sports Fitness Group Instructor?

To become a Tamiu Rec Sports Fitness Instructor you need A nationally-recognized Group Fitness certification such as ACE or AFAA, CPR Certification, 8 shadowing hours, and a demo. For more information, please contact Sylvia Quinn or Juan G. Perez.

What is Group Fitness?

Group Fitness classes are classes offered at locations such as gyms or fitness centers where a group of people meet a specified period of time, and led by an instructor in completing various exercises.

What does a Group Fitness Instructor do?

A fitness instructor leads, instructs, and motivates groups in exercise activities including cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and stretching.

Services & Prep Courses




 Fitness Instructors In Training (FIIT)

 Fitness Instructors in Training is an 18 session ACE Group Fitness Instructor Certification exam prep course. The course provides interns with hands on experience, a discount on the ACE GFI exam and most importantly, the tools to prepare for the exam. FIIT is $25 for TAMIU students and $45 for the general community. To request more information fill out the following request.
