TAMIU
Alternative Certification Program

MISSION STATEMENT
The Alternative Certification Program (ACP) prepares and transitions eligible degreed teacher candidates for careers as classroom teachers, Eligible candidates are selected and prepared in accordance with the guidelines, criteria, and standards set forth under the “No Child Left Behind Act” and the State Board of Educator Certification.
ACP candidates must complete the Pre-Assignment training. This training prepares candidates for the TExES content exam. Candidates must pass this exam in order to be considered “highly qualified” and thus eligible for hire with one of our collaborative partnership school districts.
Highly qualified candidates must secure a teaching assignment in order to participate in the internship. ACP interns are the teacher of record while continuing their preparation for the TExES Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities exam. During the internship, the ACP intern is provided with campus mentoring support and University supervision to ensure success. ACP interns are required to complete four University courses and pedagogy seminars. Upon successful completion of all coursework, seminars, and passing the required TExES exams, the intern is recommended for teacher certification to the State Board of Education Certification.
ACP courses may be used for graduate credit towards a Master of Science in Education.
