Financial Aid
The student, the student’s family, and
Texas A&M International University
work together
through federal, state, and local programs to assist in meeting the student’s financial needs
to attend college.
To obtain an equitable appraisal of the family’s financial resources and ability to meet the
cost of student education,
TAMIU
uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA),
that is processed by the United States Department of Education. These services provide the
student and the University a reasonable figure representing the student’s total Expected
Family Contribution (EFC) toward their educational costs.
The EFC is based on a formula developed by the U.S. Department of Education and
approved by the United States Congress. You and your child will need to apply for a personal
identification number (PIN), which serves as your electronic signature at the moment you
complete the FAFSA.
Many families prefer not to apply to FAFSA because the process seems too complicated
or they assume their income is too high to qualify for funds. There are plenty of financial aid
opportunities for every family. About 80% of
TAMIU
students: receive some type of financial
help. Among the most common financial aid programs are
Grants:
Federal, state or institutional funds which are considered “free money,” meaning they do
not have to be paid back. Grants are usually need-based and are conditional, based on
enrollment, GPA and other factors determined by the grant program.
Scholarships:
TAMIU
offers competitive scholarships to qualified freshmen who excel in the classroom and
beyond. Amounts and qualifications vary depending on scholarship requirements.
Work Study:
Self-aid programs provide part-time employment for students while they are enrolled in the
University. Students arepaiddirectly for their work and schools are responsible for administering
the program. Award amount varies based on the student’s needs and school’s funding level.
Loans:
Student loans, unlike grants, scholarships and work-study, are borrowed funds that must be
repaid, with interest.
