Supplemental Instruction Program

What is SI?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program that utilizes peer-assisted study sessions.  SI has proven effective in improving student academic success in courses with historically high D, F and withdrawal rates.  SI sessions provide students from the same course a designated time each week to come together to compare notes, discuss important concepts, and to develop strategies for studying with the guidance of a Supplemental Instruction Leader.

What’s an SI leader?

SI leaders are students themselves and are prepared to share with you what they have learned over the years about how to study. They know the course content and are anxious to help guide you through it. They’ll be in class with you, hearing what you hear and reading what you read. What they won’t do is lecture; their job is to help you think about the lectures you hear and the books you read, and then put it all together during the SI review sessions. SI can help you learn course material more efficiently.

How do I know if Supplemental Instruction (SI) is offered in my course?

An SI Leader will be present in your class and will usually announce it on the first day that you meet for the course and in addition, the SI Leader will likely make regular announcements throughout the semester.  If you have any doubts, don’t hesitate to contact the University Learning Center.


When do SI sessions start?

On the first day of class the SI leader will survey the class to know your availability. Each SI leader will set up one or more review sessions each week at times that are best for the majority of students taking the class. You may attend one or both (the choice is yours) and each one will be different because you’ll have new material to discuss. SI sessions are informal. Bring your notes; bring your textbook; bring your questions.

What’s in it for me?

If you attend SI sessions regularly, chances are you’ll earn a better grade. You’ll have developed a better understanding of course content as well as more effective ways of studying. This will help you throughout your academic career.

What if I want to be an SI Leader next semester?

If you performed well in the course, have a good academic record, and feel like you would enjoy leading an SI, you are welcome to contact the University Learning Center to inquire about any job openings.
