The GET PHIT Summit, held at the Cooley University Life Center in Houston, was made possible through the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health and School of Biomedical Informatics. A GET PHIT Summer Bootcamp is scheduled at TAMIU July 8 – 19, 2024. TAMIU FUTURE TEACHERS GARNER STATE, NATIONAL AWARDS IN COMPETITION TAMIU College of Education students are creating a legacy for themselves and others…as future teachers. A team of College of Education students excelled at the spring Texas Association of Future Educators Teach Tomorrow Summit and the national competition held this summer in Florida. The Texas competition was attended by 11 TAMIU students and faculty advisor Dr. Seth Sampson, TAMIU assistant professor of School Counseling, and Vanessa Almaraz, co-faculty advisor. Nine of the 11 students placed in the competition. Competing students included Katherine Aleman, Megan Flores, Jorge Guajardo, Elda Guzman, Angel Hierro, Ashley Hernández, Krystal Inclán, Haziel Mota, Andrea Martínez, Raquel Rodríguez, and Roberto Salinas. At the national competition, students Katherine Alemán, Elda Guzmán, Haziel Mota, and Raquel Rodriguez placed first in a research-supported presentation on positive practices in schools to support students with emotional disturbances. Roberto Heirro earned First Place in public speaking, addressing the teacher shortage crisis. Haziel Mota also earned First Place delivering a speech about pursuing a career in education. Meagan Flores and Andrea Martínez also earned First Place for their creation of materials to implement a lesson and facilitate students’ achievement of objectives. Katherine Alemán and Elda Guzmán were awarded Second Place for their preparation of a an interactive display board and oral presentation focused on classroom use to teach a lesson. Elda Guzmán and Krystal Inclán earned Third Place for writing and illustrating a book that was presented to an audience. Dr. Sampson said the students prepared diligently for both competitions and truly excelled at state and national competitive levels. “The students practiced a great deal for each of the competitions and developed action plans for executing each of their competitive events,” Sampson said, “Our students were amazing and exceeded their expectations and represented TAMIU, and the Laredo community with integrity.” 22
