TAMIU STUDENTS TAMIU MUSIC STUDENTS RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR TALENT Several TAMIU music students in the College of Arts and Sciences, department of Fine and Performing Arts garnered numerous accolades for their musical talents. Dante G. Carreón, a junior music performance major and budding classical pianist under the direction of Dr. Friedrich Gechter, was chosen as the 2023 Adam’s Music House Fellowship recipient. Adam’s Music House is an Austin-based organization that fosters an appreciation for classical piano. Carreón was recommended by Gechter, TAMIU associate professor of. Upon completion of the Fellowship, Carreón will receive $1,000. Ricardo Hernández, flautist and senior majoring in Music – All-Level Certification, recently submitted a recording of “Orange Dawn” by composer Ian Clarke. The submission was sent to the Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company in Plano, TX, which sponsored a workshop and masterclass by Clarke. Hernández was invited to play the piece during the workshop, and masterclass performers were selected to participate in a master class with Clarke. Carlos Merino-Gutiérrez, flautist and senior majoring in Music Performance, participated in the Texas Flute Society Collegiate/Adult Masterclass Competition. After submitting a recorded musical piece, Merino-Gutiérrez won a spot to perform at the Texas Flute Society Festival in Trophy Club, TX. MerinoGutiérrez was the only winner chosen from Texas. Hernández and Merino-Gutiérrez study under the direction of Melissa Hinojosa, TAMIU adjunct faculty member. TAMIU offers a Bachelor of Music Education and a Bachelor of Music in Performance. A music minor is also available. TAMIU BIOLOGY STUDENTS TAKE PART IN RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY Two TAMIU students recently completed an undergraduate research opportunity through the Texas A&M University’s School of Agriculture & Life Sciences’ department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology. TAMIU students Ana Ramos and Geysira Vela took part in the 2023 Summer Research and Extension Experience for Undergraduates at the Interface of Plant, Microbial, and Bioenvironmental Sciences, held in College Station. Students attending the summerlong research experience focused on learning the fundamentals of biological research while taking part in independent research activities. Ramos, a senior Biology major, noted that the opportunity to complete the research project aligned with her future career goals. Her readiness for this Geysira Vela 23
