The College of Arts and Humanities performs four major functions at the University. It increases (1) students' ability to communicate through the use of the written and spoken word; (2) their knowledge and appreciation of culture, fine arts, social integration; and (3) self realization. The College also prepares students for a variety of professions and roles by providing a broad-based liberal arts education. Finally, it also (4) exposes the students in other Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) colleges to the breadth of arts and humanities.
See Academic Regulations - Undergraduate for specific TAMIU regulations.
Students may elect to take the Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in the College of Arts and Humanities and obtain their secondary teaching certificate by including as electives twenty-one hours of Professional Development courses plus three hours of reading (listed under Support Areas).
Such students must also meet selection and admission requirements to the secondary certification program and must complete coursework for two approved teaching fields. Students seeking teacher certification will also be required to successfully complete the Examination for the Certification of Educators in Texas (ExCET).
For additional information, see teacher requirements listed in the undergraduate degrees introduction section of the College of Education.
Individuals seeking initial teacher certification are required to enroll in the following three one (1) semester credit hour courses to satisfy the three semester credit hour Computer Literacy requirement in the core curriculum:
EDCI 2101 Curriculum and Instructional Technology I
EDCI 3101 Curriculum and Instructional Technology II
EDCI 3103 Curriculum and Instructional Technology III
Satisfactory performance on the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) will allow students to receive up to six (6) hours credit in Spanish, specifically for SPAN 1301, and SPAN 1302. Students who intend to take the CLEP must sit for this examination before enrolling in any of the University's courses in Spanish.
Students may receive up to six (6) hours additional credit in Spanish after satisfactory completion of another examination developed by the Department of English, Fine Arts, and Spanish. These additional credits would be for SPAN 1305, and SPAN 1306. For further information the student should contact that Department Chair.
To be eligible for admission to law school the student must have completed a baccalaureate degree. In addition, each applicant to law school must take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). This test is usually taken during October of the senior year. While law schools consider a variety of factors, the LSAT score and undergraduate performance are generally given the most weight in determining which applicants will be admitted to a given law school.
The first two years of study for pre-law students are similar to the core curriculum courses taken by all students at Texas A&M International University. The final two years will be used to fulfill the remaining requirements of an undergraduate degree. Law schools do not require that students select any particular major or sequence of courses as undergraduates. However, according to the Association of American Law Schools, a prelegal education should emphasize oral and written communication skills, a critical understanding of social institutions, and analytical thinking. Therefore, with regard to the selection of appropriate electives, pre-law students should seek the advice of a pre-law advisor in the College of Arts and Humanities.
The following courses are some of those recommended as electives for the pre-law student: PSCI 4311, PSCI 4312, PSCI 4326 or CRIJ 1306, CRIJ 1301, ACC 2310, BA 3310, HIST 3310, and HIST 3350.
In addition to helping pre-law students with the selection of course electives, the pre-law advisor can assist students in obtaining information about particular law schools, LSAT preparation, and the activities of the pre-law student organization.
Students who pursue the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) degree follow a different basic academic curriculum than the Bachelor of Arts degree, however, the integrity and fifty-eight (58) hours of the core curriculum are retained. The BAAS degree is an inverted degree designed to interface with junior and community colleges' Associate of Arts degrees. It is designed for students who have already earned credit in a vocational-technical area or any area not offered at TAMIU (such as physical education or art). In some instances, students may be granted vocational-technical field credit for work experience.
The following courses make up the Core Curriculum for all Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) degrees offered by the College of Arts and Humanities. These courses must be taken to complete a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree.
