To assist students in meeting these goals, faculty recognize the need for, and are committed to, on-going professional development through education, practice, community service, research, and scholarly publications.

SECONDARY TEACHING CERTIFICATE

Students may elect to take the Bachelor's degree in The College of Science and Technology and obtain their secondary teaching certificate by including as electives twenty-one hours of Professional Development courses plus the six hours in the Support Areas.

Such students must also meet selection and admission requirements to the secondary certification program and must complete coursework for two approved teaching fields. Students seeking teacher certification will also be required to successfully complete the Examination for the Certification of Educators in Texas (ExCET). For additional information, see teacher requirements listed in the undergraduate degrees section of The College of Education.

CIS Requirements for the Secondary Teaching Certificate

Individuals seeking initial teacher certification are required to enroll in the following three one (1) semester credit hour courses to satisfy the three semester credit hour Computer Literacy requirement in the core curriculum: EDCI 2101, EDCI 3101, and EDCI 3103.

SCHOOL OF NURSING

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Registered Nurses seeking admission to the RN/BSN program must apply directly to the School of Nursing. Admission to the University does not automatically guarantee admission to the School of Nursing. In addition to completing all requirements for general admission to the University, the student must meet the following criteria:

1. Completion of a School of Nursing Application (in addition to the University application form).

2. Evidence of current licensure in good standing as a Registered Nurse in Texas. A student who is currently enrolled in a basic nursing program may apply for admission provided the state board examination is taken before enrolling in nursing courses. Licensure must be obtained before completion of the first semester course work for continuance in the nursing program. The School of Nursing office must be notified at the time the student receives the state board results.

3. A 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or better cumulative grade point average (GPA) in all previous subjects taken.

4. A 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or better cumulative grade point average in all previous nursing coursework.

5. A personal interview with the Nursing Admissions and Progression Committee may be required.

6. Evidence of current rubella and DT immunizations, PPD or chest X-ray, Hep B vaccine or signed informed refusal, and physical examination certifying good health/no restrictions.

7. Requests for exceptions from GPA or other admission requirements, supported by evidence of extenuating circumstances, will be considered by the School of Nursing Admissions and Progression Committee only after an official School of Nursing Application has been filed. Such considerations for exceptions will be based on the individual student's work performance, academic record, and motivation to continue professional advancement.

If at any time the number of applications should exceed the faculty and facilities available, the final selection of students will be based upon the dates the applications were received and upon the dates the requirements for admission were met.
