Jorge F. Gonzalez '87 has been appointed as one of the three new board of trustee members to the Laredo Medical Center. Jorge has almost two decades of banking and business experience. He joined Falcon International Bank in September 2003. He is responsible for Falcon's Retail Banking Department and instilling a sales culture throughout the bank and its branches. To do so, he works closely with branch managers and new accounts representatives to ascertain that bank products and services are continually cross-sold. Jorge also recruits accounts and develops relationships with customers and prospects throughout the community. Additionally, Jorge has developed a successful Sales and Referral Incentive Program that is currently used throughout Falcon’s branch network. He also holds the general lines agent license for Life and Health.

Jorge has dedicatedly served on the United Way Board of Directors for 16 years and has served as past president for United Way, the American Heart Association, and Communities in Schools. Currently, Gonzalez dedicates time and service to the Boys and Girls Club Board, WBCA Board, Mercy Ministries of Laredo Board, and the South Texas Workforce Development Board. Additionally, he is a member of Toastmaster International, Gateway Rotary, and was the First Commissioner for Roundball on the Rio benefiting Special Olympics.

Jorge graduated in the top 10% in his J. W. Nixon High School class of 1975, and then went on to graduate with honors from Laredo State University with a BBA in General Business.

New TAMIU Alumni Officers Selected

On June 7, the TAMIU Alumni Association elected the 2006-2007 board 2006-2007 TAMIU Alumni Officers nominees at their quarterly meeting hosted by Commerce Bank on San Dario. The new officers are Orlando Navarro '94, president, Raquel Juarez '00, secretary, Jessica Palacios '03, president-elect, and Juan Jose Garza '04, treasurer.

In his first function as president of the Alumni Orlando Navarro presents plaque to outgoing TAMIU Alumni President Henry Flores Association, Orlando presented a plaque to Henry Flores '72 as a token of appreciation for his term as Alumni president.

Alumni officers and members discussed the recent alumni fundraising activities such as the May’s Commencement Rose Sale,chaired by Gloria Madrigal '98 which was a huge success with a total profit of $1,609.00. Future fundraising events discussed included AutMus Fest 2006. Danielle Gomez '03, public relations chair, introduced community guests Sammy Ramirez and Raul Rodriguez, of BMP Radio, to announce their support of the Alumni Association for the promotion of AutMus Fest. Institutional Advancement vice president, Candy Hein, invited those present to the first NCAA soccer game to be held on August 29th as part of “Welcome Week” activities for the Fall 06 semester.

Orlando invited those present to continue to participate and recruit more TAMIU, LSU, and A&I former students to strengthen Association. He promised a year filled with exciting news and activities from the TAMIU Alumni Association.

Michael Dickerson '98 provided financial peace-of-mind to TAMIU employees during Staff Enrichment Day held on Friday, May 26. The session taught the participants how to eliminate debt, improve credit scores, and get onto the road to a strong financial future. Michael’s participation in this event is just one of the ways in which former students may increase their level of participation with TAMIU.

Have You Seen? Veronica Costilla '93 received her Masters of Education degree in Library Science on May 12, 2006, from Sam Houston State University. Juanita C. Vela '72, executive director for special education for the UISD, has been teaching Laredo’s youth for almost 40 years. Cecilia Reyna '98, '02 is a diagnostician for the Special Education Department at LISD. Laura Cruz-Garza '00 received her Ph.D. in psychology from Texas Tech University in Lubbock on May 12, 2006. Miguel Conchas '76 smiles as he receives the Eagle Compass Exemplary Life Award from Stephany Vasquez during the graduation exercises of the Eagle Academy at Texas A&M International University. Bryan M. Smith is a senior majoring in fitness and sports who enjoys playing baseball. Bryan is currently an employee at the LEC. Ernesto R. Cavazos '85 received a plaque for his service to the League of United Latin American Citizens as local and state legal counsel.
