M.S. in Psychology Courses

 

Subject Area Courses (5300’s-5310’s)

PSYC 5302 Survey of Social Psychology. Three semester hours.

Explores principles and issues of social psychology, such as social cognition, prejudice and discrimination, identity, attitudes, social influence, social perception and the empirical methods used to study the effects of social variables in the individual’s behavior. Course may be repeated when topic changes. Prerequisite: Graduate standing, or permission of the instructor.

PSYC 5304 Survey of Personality and Abnormal Psychology. Three semester hours.

Advanced survey course examining the major theories of personality and the development of psychopathology. Consideration of such topics as Freudian and neo-Freudian theory, interpersonal, humanistic and existential theories, and behavioral and social cognitive approaches.  Causes, treatment, and phenomenology of psychopathology are explored, with emphasis on the integration of personality and models of abnormality.  This course may be taken to fulfill the PSYC 4301 and PSYC 4303 stem-work requirement.  Prerequisite:  Graduate standing, or permission of the instructor.

 

Assessment and Psychometrics (5340’s)

PSYC 5341 Classroom Assessment. Three semester hours.

Focuses on current research and practice in the field of classroom-based assessment. Topics covered in this course include: Types of assessments, test construction, item writing, item analysis, validity, and reliability. Prerequisite:  Graduate standing, or permission of the instructor.

PSYC 5342 Psychometrics. Three semester hours.

Focuses on principles of classical and modern testing theory including validity and reliability, norms, and standard setting. Prerequisite:  Graduate standing, or permission of the instructor.

 

Research Methods & Statistics (5360’s)

PSYC 5360 Quantitative Methods. Three semester hours.

Explores the principles and methods of behavioral research stressing interdependence of experimental design and statistical evaluation of results. An in-depth study of simple and complex research techniques including between- and within-subjects, and other higher-order designs (e.g., mixed and nested designs). Prerequisite: PSYC 5365 and PSYC 5320, or permission of the instructor.

PSYC 5361 Qualitative research. Three semester hours.

Surveys major principles and approaches of qualitative research including; phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case study research.

PSYC 5362 Program Evaluation. Three semester hours.

Explores the principles and methodologies of program evaluation including philosophical orientations, quantitative methods, qualitative methods, and mixed-methods. Prerequisite: PSYC 5320 and PSYC 5361, or permission of the instructor.

PSYC 5365 Advanced Statistics. Three semester hours.

Analyzes the fundamentals of multiple regression and correlation, principles of experimental design, analysis of variance (ANOVA) including factorial and repeated-measures designs and a priori and post hoc comparisons. Introduces computer-based statistical packages in the analysis of both categorical and continuous data from psychological research.  Prerequisite: PSYC 5320, or permission of the instructor.

PSYC 5368 Special Topics in Research Methods. Three semester hours.

Exams specific methods of quantitative research, qualitative research, program evaluation, or statistics not addressed in other courses and/or current issues/debates in the area of research methods. Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor. May be repeated when topic changes by permission of the instructor.

PSYC 5369 Special Topics in Qualitative Methods. Three semester hours.

Explores specific methods of qualitative research and/or addresses current issues/debates in the area of qualitative research. Prerequisites: PSYC 5361, or permission of the instructor. May be repeated when topic changes by permission of the instructor.

 

Cognition, Learning, and Instruction (5370’s)

PSYC 5370 Cognitive Science. Three semester hours.

Familiarizes the student with the basic principles from laboratory research in conditioning, learning, and cognitive processes.  Introduces the principles and applications of learning, behavior modification, animal cognition, and human information processing. Prerequisite:  Graduate standing or permission of the instructor.

PSYC 5371 Educational Psychology. Three semester hours.

Focuses on current research and practice in the areas of learning and instruction. Topics covered include: Theories of learning and cognitive development, social and emotional development, motivation, classroom management, individual differences, and assessment. Prerequisite:  Graduate standing, or permission of the instructor.

PSYC 5372 Applying Cognitive Theories to Teaching. Three semester hours.

Explores the applications of cognitive theories to learning and instruction through readings and discussions of current educational and psychological theory and research. Prerequisite:  Graduate standing, or permission of the instructor.


Internships, Practicum, and Theses (5380’s-5390’s)

PSYC 5380 College Internship in Psychology. Three semester hours.

Provides practical research or teaching experience in psychology.  Student must complete 150 clock hours in a supervised internship experience. Prerequisite: Completion of the Major Curriculum course work, or permission of the instructor.  [Note:  Credit/No Credit course]

PSYC 5381 College Internship in Psychology II. Six semester hours.

Provides practical research or teaching experience in psychology.  Student must complete 300 clock hours in a supervised internship experience. Prerequisite: Completion of the Major Curriculum course work and PSYC 5380, or permission of the instructor.  [Note:  Credit/No Credit course]

PSYC 5398 Thesis. Three semester hours.

Scheduled by the student in consultation with his/her major professor. Prerequisites: Twenty seven semester hours of the major curriculum including PSYC 5320 and successful completion of Written Comprehensive Approval of the major professor and department chair is also required. Evaluation of performance in this course is on CR/NC basis. If grade of IP is received, student must enroll again for credit.

PSYC 5399 Thesis. Three semester hours. Scheduled by the student in consultation with his/her major professor. Prerequisite: Twenty-seven hours of the major curriculum including PSYC 5398. Approval of the major professor and department chair is also required. Evaluation of performance in this course is on CR/NC basis. If grade of IP received, student must enroll again for credit.
