A&M International Students Present Papers at Conference
Texas A&M International University students Mark A. Bailey and Lizette Gutierrez presented papers at the 1998 Southwest Social Science Association Conference in Corpus Christi. The papers were presented during Phi Alpha Theta sessions of the conference. Phi Alpha Theta is a history honor fraternity.
Bailey's paper, "Women's Christian Temperance Union Philanthropic Activity: Its Impact on the Women's Movement," detailed the political and social issues addressed by the WCTU after the organization adopted a philanthropic philosophy.
Gutierrez' paper, "Gilded Age Law Enforcement: Order or Disorder?" described how machine politics controlled both the New York City Police Department and the cop on the street during the Tammany Hall era.
Bailey and Gutierrez originally wrote the papers for a history course taught by A&M International Assistant Professor of History Dr. Peggy Hardman. Dr. Hardman believed the papers to be "very well-researched, well-written, and well-presented." Because of the caliber of the work, she submitted the papers to the Southwest Social Science Association Conference. Other papers presented at the conference were authored by graduate students, doctoral candidates, and respected history professionals.
Both Bailey and Gutierrez are undergraduate students pursuing a Bachelor's degree in History. Bailey, who is minoring in Biology, will graduate in August, Gutierrez, minoring in Political Science, will graduate in May. Both plan to pursue a Master's degree at A&M International after graduation.
