University Campus Featured in 'Texas Architect' Article

The dramatic architecture of Texas A&M International University is highlighted in a color feature in the January/February issue of Texas Architect magazine.

In an article titled "A Sense of Scale," author Jonathan Hagood praises the University's utilization of scale in Phases I and II for providing an impressive template for future campus growth.

Featuring color photos of the campus by Greg Hursley, the article interviews architect John Kell of the joint venture firm of Kell Munoz Wigodsky and Ford Powell Carson. Local consultants on the project included Turner, Hickey and Associates.

Kell notes that the first phases of the University had to set the tone for the University's future growth and did so by providing a grand sense of scale and a common design vocabulary that could define campus growth.

Author Hagood concurs, noting "For (A&M International), which wants to be a major educational institution, its new campus had to be of a scale and grandeur equivalent to this vision, and its new buildings echo this goal," he writes.

The University is readying for its planned Phase III expansion which will add a Student Development Center, Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, Center for the Study of Western Hemispheric Trade and Intramural Sports Complex to the campus.

The addition, projected to cost $46 million, will increase the campus' current size by some sixty percent.
