TAMIU Gets Funding from First Generation College Student Grant

Texas A&M International University is one of 20 grant recipients selected for funding under the new Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's First Generation College Student Grant Program (FGCSG). TAMIU will receive a $30,000 grant.

Established in 2003 by the Coordinating Board as the result of a joint grant award from the U.S. Department of Labor to the Texas Workforce Commission, the Texas Education Agency and the Coordinating Board, the FGCSG's goal is to increase the participation and success of economically disadvantaged first-generation students in college. A total of $600,000 was made available to those selected for the program.

The awards were competitive and were reviewed based upon responsiveness to the criteria of the request, the program quality and other selection criteria, including federal appropriation restrictions.

Project director for the TAMIU grant is Dr. Thomas Corti, vice president for Student Affairs.

Corti said the primary use of the grant will be to assist students with book purchases.

"As is the case nationwide, this is a strong need area for students and we hope to be able to provide qualified students with $500 vouchers to help them meet their outstanding book expenses," Dr. Corti explained.
