TAMIU Inducts Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society

Texas A&M International University now has a chapter of the nation's oldest and largest all-disciplinary honor society, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

TAMIU inducted its chapter 296 in a ceremony held Sunday, Nov. 6 in the TAMIU Student Center.  State Senator Judith Zaffirini was guest speaker.  Dr. Gil Folwer, vice president of the South Central Region of Phi Kappa Phi, officiated.

63 undergraduate and graduate student members (photo) were initiated along with select faculty, professional staff, University alumni and community members. (photo)  

Officers installed were:  president,  Dr. Thomas R. Mitchell, president-elect,  Dr. Kathleen Pletsch de García, secretary,  Dr. Deborah Blackwell and  treasurer,  Dr. Dan Jones.

In addition to the officers, charter members include Clayton Baum, Dr. Barbara Greybeck,  Dr. Juan Homero Hinojosa, Dr. J. Charles Jennett, Patricia Keck, Dr. Ray Keck, Dr. Archibald Laud-Hammond, John Maxstadt, Dr. James Norris, Dr. Doris Rosenow,  Dr. Judith Warner and Dr. Judith Zaffirini.

Undergraduate students initiated included: Anna M. Aguiar, Elizabeth Alejandro, Jennifer Anne Batey, Dulce M. Berman-Tijerina, Margarita Brizuela, Araceli Marie Cadena, Norma Alicia Cadena, Sara Abi Cano, Linda Janelle Díaz, Elizabeth Estrada, María Eugenia Figueroa, María Fjelstad, Verónica Flores, Grace Nelly Gabala, Julisa García, Eduardo J. Faculty members and administrators initiated included:  Ronald  J. Anderson,  Mohamed A. Ben-Ruwin, Jeffrey M. Brown,  Jeffrey Dean Cass,  Humberto R. González,  Frank John Grzych,  Roberto R. Heredia,  John C. Kilburn Jr.,  Ned Kock, Sushma Krishnamurthy,  Janet Eager Krueger, Juan R. Lira and Nasser Momayezi.

Founded in 1897, The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi annually inducts over 32,000 student, faculty, professional staff and university alumni members from more than 280 select colleges and universities.

Those elected to membership include the upper 7.5 percent of last-term juniors and the upper 10 percent of seniors, the upper 10 percent of graduate students, along with outstanding faculty and alumni.

The PKP motto is "Let the Love of Learning Rule Humanity."
