Students interested in fitness and sports will benefit from a new graduate field of study that will be offered this Fall at Texas A&M International University.

TAMIU’s College of Education has developed this academic concentration in response to significant interest from students, said Dr. Humberto González, dean of the College of Education.

“We pride ourselves on offering programs that are responsive to our service communities’ needs, and this is our latest initiative. It’s aimed at helping qualified individuals enhance their professional career opportunities.  The Fitness and Sports concentration can allow individuals to obtain a deeper understanding of issues such as the physiology of aging, exercise physiology, sports psychology, enhancement of performance in sports, sports pedagogy, and curriculum in Physical Education,”  Dr. Gonzalez said.

Dr. Juan Lira, chair of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, explained the  concentration can consist of 12-18-semester credit hours and can be easily incorporated into Master’s degrees already offered by the College.

“The Fitness and Sports area can be incorporated into the Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction and the  Master of Science in Education with majors in Bilingual Education, Early Childhood Education, Reading, or Special Education.  We’re also exploring the possibility of including Fitness and Sports as one concentration within the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies Degree delivered by the College of Arts and Sciences,” he said.

Those interested will need to complete an application, provide official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores within five years of the time of the application, and official transcripts. All should be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies on or before April 30 for those seeking admission for the Summer or Fall terms.

Those who are considering admission for the Spring term will need to submit the same materials by November 30.
