TAMIU Opens New ‘Bridge’ at Student Center Monday

A student referendum-approved expansion of the Texas A&M International University Student Center will  “bridge” new space and study opportunities for TAMIU students and opens Monday, March 24 at 2 p.m.

The primary part of an ongoing expansion, the addition provides a 7,400 square foot computer lounge, complete with group creative and workspaces in an open concept layout.

The expansion, part of a student referendum passed in Spring 2012, significantly increases the Student Center, long a hub of TAMIU student life.  Additional components include increased seating in Dusty’s Diner, a relocation of the student game room to the first floor with a separate entrance and the enclosure of an existing patio to allow for open air or shaded events.  

Juan J. Castillo, TAMIU vice president for finance and administration, said the addition focuses on a flexible creative and learning environment that can be responsive to both current and future needs.

“We really wanted to create a space that could capitalize on technology, while still enabling direct student-to-student interaction.  The result incorporates some highly flexible virtual desktop (VDI) computing clients, soft seating groups with powered tables, pod areas for student workspaces, onsite and wireless printing and wireless access and power throughout.  The combination creates an open architecture conducive not only to current, but future technology…all while encouraging students to interact with each other,” Castillo explained.

The new addition, only accessible to currently enrolled students, also provides  counter-height seating that overlooks the Lamar Bruni Vergara Memorial Garden, some 119 computing clients and, through wireless access and power availability, encourages (BYOD) bring-your-own-device use.

Architects for the project were Frank Architects, Inc. and Pfluger Architects, LP.  General contractor was Alpha Building Corporation.

The Student Center was first constructed in 2002 when the University’s student population numbered about 3,300. The University’s student body continues to mushroom and in Fall exceeded 7,400 students.
