Texas A&M International University’s (TAMIU) GEAR UP IV program will participate in the National GEAR UP Week 2014 celebration, taking place Monday – Saturday, Sept. 22-27.

The week commemorates the continuing success of Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), a college access program providing students and families the support and resources they need for college access and success.

Since its inception in 1999, GEAR UP has improved educational outcomes for millions of low-income, minority and disadvantaged students across the United States.

Martha S. Treviño, program manager for TAMIU GEAR UP IV, said students at GEAR UP high schools in Laredo, Crystal City, Carrizo Springs, La Pryor, Cotulla, Dilley and Pearsall will celebrate the week by participating in various activities that will assist them in preparing for postsecondary education.

TAMIU GEAR UP IV will also host nationally renowned speaker, Mario Rocha, at various high schools. Rocha will share his powerful story based on his life and being imprisoned for 10 years and turning his life around.

The week’s activities culminate with a College Fair at TAMIU Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.  Those participating in the Fair will learn about programs offered by different colleges and universities and financial aid for higher education.  Additionally, they will also have the opportunity to hear nationally renowned motivational speaker, E.J. Laurel.

The 7-year, $42 million TAMIU GEAR UP grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education.
