The Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) GEAR UP IV program's celebration of  National GEAR UP Week 2014 concludes Saturday, Sept. 27.

The week’s activities culminate with a College Fair at TAMIU Saturday, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.  Those participating in the Fair will learn about programs offered by different colleges and universities and financial aid for higher education.  Additionally, they will hear from nationally renowned motivational speaker, E. J. Laurel.

This week has commemorated the continuing success of Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), a college access program providing students and families the support and resources they need for college access and success.

Martha S. Treviño, program manager for TAMIU GEAR UP IV, said students at GEAR UP high schools in Laredo, Crystal City, Carrizo Springs, La Pryor, Cotulla, Dilley and Pearsall have all celebrated the week  by participating in various activities focused on preparing them  for postsecondary education.

Since its inception in 1999, GEAR UP has improved educational outcomes for millions of low-income, minority and disadvantaged students across the United States.

TAMIU GEAR UP IV has also hosted  nationally renowned speaker  Mario Rocha at various high schools. Rocha shared his powerful story based on his life, 10-year imprisonment and successful efforts to turn his  life around.

The 7-year, $42 million TAMIU GEAR UP grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education.
