TAMIU Art Professor Gets Artist Award, Grant

Texas A&M International University assistant professor of Art David Bogus has been named the recipient of a 2015 Emerging Artist Award/Grant from the National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts (NCECA).

Over 70 applications from a diverse applicant pool of US artists were reviewed.

In making the announcement, NCECA director at large Jane Shellenbarger said jurors were impressed with Bogus’ work.

“The jurors identified you for your exceptional work as an early-career artist and felt that you would make a significant contribution to our field.  You represent a significant voice amongst the next generation of contemporary ceramic artists,”  Shellenbarger wrote in notifying Bogus of the award.

In addition to 2015 Emerging Artists recognition, Bogus will receive a $3,300 award.  A selection of his work will be displayed at the Emerging Artists Exhibition in the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence in March and he will give a presentation on his works.

Bogus said he felt the recognition was made possible by the support he has received from TAMIU and College of Arts and Sciences’ Dean, Dr. Tom Mitchell.

“This a direct result of the generosity of TAMIU, and Dr. Mitchell’s support of my scholarship and research.  I have tried for this particular opportunity for several years, and it is very special that I will get to share my work in Providence this coming year,”  Bogus said.

Bogus joined the University in 2010. He holds his MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a BFA from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. He was previously named a finalist in the 2012 NICHE Awards Competition, considered the highest recognition for both production and limited-edition craft works made in the United States and Canada.

Registration for Spring 2015 is underway at TAMIU.  Classes begin Jan. 20, 2015.
