TAMIU Professor Receives Fellowship, Contract

An assistant professor within the Masters in Counseling Psychology program at Texas A&M International University is celebrating two triumphs this summer. Dr. Ediza García,  will spend a week in in Washington, D.C. at the highly competitive American Psychological Association’s Minority Fellowship Program Psychology Summer Institute and she received a $90,000 contract from the Health and Human Services Commission Center for Elimination of Disproportionality and Disparities Office of Minority and Heath and Health Equity.

The highly competitive fellowship program is based on Dr. Garcia’s research project, “The Implementation of FOCUS with Latinos Living in a Border Town: A Cultural Adaptation.”

“This institute will help me refine the project with the goal of submitting for a grant and implementing the project in the future.  It’s based upon a collaboration with the University of California, Los Angeles and aims to increase family resilience among Latinos.” García said.

The $90,000 contract is to evaluate the Texas State Partnership Initiative to Address Health Disparities, a project to reduce obesity rates and increase body mass index, diabetes and hypertension screening and referral services among African American and Hispanic adults in the target areas of Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Laredo.
